Children have a kind of instinct, a special sensibility, which urges them to acquire new words. Between three and five years especially, the child’s mind continues to absorb words.
The science of reading is the current recommended literacy improvement strategy in more than half of all states. It incorporates several literacy components that researchers have found to be essential for effective reading instruction. One of those components is phonics. Maria Montessori knew that phonics was an important part of learning to read, but she also knew that young children learn through play, which means that they learn tactilely and kinesthetically. This was the reason for her sensorial curriculum. She also found ways to include sensory with language materials such as sandpaper letters, metal insets, and the moveable alphabet. These materials also reflect her theory that it is easier for young children to learn to write before they read. Use these materials with your child at home, and he will quickly acquire early language skills through play, with a bonus of improving fine motor control along the way.
