Order is one of the needs of life which, when it is satisfied, produces a real happiness.

In The Absorbent Mind, Maria Montessori stated that “…the little child’s need for order is one of the most powerful incentives to dominate his early life.” This need is what drives children to enjoy the act of cleaning. The practical life activities provide opportunities for them to practice the repetitive motions involved in so many of these tasks. Repetitive behaviors are also key to brain development.

Think about it—the back and forth of the broom, round and round with the sponge when washing dishes, or repeatedly pulling down on the squeegee while washing windows are all very monotonous to an adult. Right? To a child, though, they are instinctively filling this need for order and “wiring” their brains through these same humdrum motions.

At home, you can support this need by preparing your child’s environment especially for him to engage in cleaning activities whenever he chooses. You may want to choose a low drawer or cabinet in the kitchen and stock it with items that your child may use independently. Remember, never put cleaning products that are not non-toxic within reach of children. Montessori Services has several products that are safe for children, such as metal and wood polish. They also have beeswax polish! For windows and mirrors, you can fill spray bottles with equal parts water and vinegar. You can also add a little lemon juice for a fresh, clean scent!

There are also plenty of options for child-sized cleaning tools, from whole sets that Montessori Services offers to budget-friendly options like this mini broom with dustpan, this small squeegee, or these beautiful colored basins.

With your help, your child will be able to practice over and over but won’t have to interrupt your daily tasks in order to do so. He will be happy, and your house will be clean!
